It all started in the 90's!! I love my 80's but how I’m missing the 90’s!
Especially all those 90's shows like Full House, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, but…there was one show that I just couldn’t keep my eyes off of… and that was this spunky anime called Sailor Moon…
It all started when I was in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico for a family vacation, and since we lived in a ranch and the city is 30 minutes away, my entertainment was the TV. My dad didn’t let me get near the animals to ride them alone because they thought it was too dangerous since I really didn’t have experience in riding and I could hurt myself.
So there I was one day watching TV, when I changed the channel and I started to see this cartoon (Spanish version, at the time I thought it was just a kids cartoon) about a beautiful princess that was a warrior, and a sailor scout. She would defend her friends and her prince and fight the evil villains to protect earth and the universe. I became curious and the more I watched the more I fell in love with manga series, and since I didn’t know about google I didn’t know where to search to see Sailor Moon again.
Not until I was back in Oxnard did I see Sailor Moon again, but this time it was the english version. Some time later I found a way to find Sailor Moon and I would print photos of Sailor moon and would stick them on my wall. I loved the fact that Sailor Moon was about fighting evil, and a girl gang kicking some serious ass. It was not the typical princess that gets saved by the prince but the other way around, a princess that saves her prince and with the help of her sailor scouts also saves the universe. I feel the character I most relate to is Sailor moon. She might go as Usagi Tsukino, Usako, Sobrina, Princess Senerity, but as she is seen as a clumsy girl; cry’s a lot, loves to eat, seems always distracted, I can relate to her so much because I myself are those things. I’m not perfect but I try to be and I just accept myself. What I also like about Sailor Moon is she is always there for her friends and finds a way to help them and never gives up. That’s what I’m about too, I can be immature and clumsy but I always try to be there for my friends when they need me.
It might look like a simple cartoon for kids but it's a special manga from Japan.
Japan sure does a great job with the animation and story plot. This show is a lesson to us all to be kind, love, be a friend, fight back no matter how much you want to give up. A princess doesn’t need to be rescued all the time, a princess can be a hero too.
LA Movie premier event
On January 13, 2017 in Los Angeles, Viz Media had a movie event “Sailor Moon R” at the Ace hotel. I never imagined I would be around other people that loved Sailor Moon like me.
It was my chance to be part of this great event. As I arrived that evening I was shocked to see thousands of people forming a line that extended all around the block! My boyfriend Ramiro wanted to come early but it didn't occur to me that so many people would come to check out the Sailor Moon R movie premier. It sure feels nice when you're not the only one that likes Sailor Moon because when I was younger it sure felt like I was the only one that loved Sailor Moon. Since I came from a family full of boys, and even my neighborhood was full of boys and well… since I didn’t want to be a loner I would play boy games, that is, until I was on my own then I would continue to play with my barbies and watch Sailor Moon.
When we finally made it inside they gave me an envelope and inside it was a mini postcard of a sailor scout. Every envelope had different characters, but my boyfriend and I got the same Sailor scout… Venus! Then of course there was a lot of action inside. There were some booths that was selling Sailor Moon stuff including the remake of Sailor Moon R. At the entrance they had a photo stand and of course I was running out of time so I jumped ahead of the line straight to the front and had my boyfriend take photos. That’s how I am, sometimes I just go for it!
After the photo booth we went inside and noticed the bar serving Sailor Moon drinks, and yes! Of course! I had to take the Sailor Moon drink menu as a souvenir and perhaps see if I can make some on my own.
All these years I would never have thought I would be in a Sailor Moon event. After getting our Sailor Moon drinks we went inside the theater and thanks to my beautiful awesome friend Andrea and her friend, they managed to save us two seats near the front where you could see the host of the show wearing a princess costume. She looked so cute it reminded me of the princess in the movie Dorthy. Once the host introduced the show and gave us some surprises we were able to see the first part in which we got to know the people that did the voices of the characters and talking about what they thought of the movie. After they introduced the characters it was interesting because there were some parts I had never seen like the mini story of Sailor Venus. I was just blown away seeing the plot and other things I hadn't seen. And finally came the movie, and even though I'd seen it in spanish and the japanese version, I finally got to see it in the english version and to me it felt strange, and some would agree they liked the Japanese version or the old version of Sailor Moon. But the fact we had this big event and showing the characters just blew me away!
I know it's weird to see something new when you're used to that version but let's just have an open mind.
When the movie ended the Sailor Moon cast came out and introduced themselves. It was nice to see faces to the voices of the characters, some sounded almost the same as the 90's English version, some characters were a little different to what we were used to hearing.. but over all it was a successful event!
At the end of the night after the event was finished as we were walking out I noticed they were having interviews with the fans on their thoughts about the movie and as my curiosity got the best of me, I asked a random guy what was going on exactly and he responded you asked the right person, we are interviewing fans about the show, so out of that I managed to get a free Sailor Moon poster by sharing my thoughts about the movie. There were so many people to be interviewed I was one of the last people to talk. As I was talking I noticed mostly everyone had left and we were one of the few people still there. I looked around and took a last look of the place.
Even though the Sailor Moon event took place at the theater at the Ace hotel, I was amazed at how the construction was done, but since it was still early in the night we decided to explore the Ace Hotel. Inside they have a small bar/restaurant and man are the drinks delicious! So many nice people around to meet, if you're ever in Ace Hotel check out the lounge they have upstairs, the scenery is mesmerizing.
QUICK NOTE:
Get to know Naoko Takeuchi! Japanese manga artist. She is the one that created Sailor Moon and other anime series.
Acording to wikipedia this is a quick reference of how she managed to go to creating the great Sailor Moon animation….
She earned the 2nd Nakayoshi Comic Prize for Newcomers in 1985 for Yume ja Nai no Ne and the 1986 New Artist award for Love Call. Her next manga Sailor Moon, went on to become one of the most popular and successful manga around the world, with over 35 million copies sold worldwide. In 1993, she earned theKodansha Manga Award for the series. In early Life..
“Takeuchi was born in Kofu to Kenji and Ikuko Takeuchi; she has a younger brother, Shingo. She used the names of her family members in the manga of Sailor Moon, and mentions this in interviews and in several comic-strips which she produced in place of author-notes.
Takeuchi attended Kofu Ichi High School.[1] She wore sailor suit uniforms and joined the astronomy and manga clubs.[2] This experience later influenced her work, Sailor Moon, as well as her previous manga such as Love Call and Rain Kiss. She wanted to become a manga artist at this age. However, Kenji suggested that Takeuchi should find another profession if she did not make it as an artist, so she went to university to study chemistry.
Takeuchi graduated from Kyoritsu University of Pharmacy, where she received a degree in chemistry and became a licensed pharmacist. Her senior thesis was called "Heightened Effects of Thrombolytic Actions Due to Ultrasound".
Career…
“Before becoming a manga artist, Takeuchi worked as a miko at the Shiba Daijingu shrine near her university. This experience later became the basis for one of her characters in Sailor Moon, Rei Hino.
After graduating from Kyoritsu University of Pharmacy, Takeuchi entered the manga industry by submitting Love Call to Kodansha at the age of 19, which received an award. She worked steadily on one-shot pieces until writing Maria, which was published in Nakayoshi from early to mid-1990. She based this work, her first serial comic, loosely on Daddy-Long-Legs and on her friend Marie Koizumi, who helped her write it.”
